I came across this handcrafted ad from the school of Roycroft. Featuring Pears' Soap. I found it in the back of a thin volume, a biography of Richard Wagner, the composer. The ad ran in 1900s. The tag line and the body copy is unusual, high brow and indirect: "Whosoever thinks a faultless piece to see, Thinks what ne'er was, not is, nor e'er shall be." What? A reference to Pope. What?
In the end, the ad copy returns to more convention fare:
"Pears' Soap is not an expensive soap and it is all soap, pure soap, nothing but soap".
No product photos, just earnest copy. Imagine.

Yes, good earnest copy and without putting another company down. I see more and more companies doing that these days. Love your blog! xo
